The goal of Concord Reads is to celebrate the written word and to build social capital.  Concord Reads brings people together by encouraging them to read and participate in discussions and other events about the same book.

When choosing a title the committee considers many things, including if it appeals to a wide audience, has issues that the community can relate to or that would spark interesting discussions, if it has received any recognition or awards, if the author or another speaker is available, if it is available in paperback and any other formats, how long it is, and if the reading level is accessible to a wide audience.
